*Did you know that the Spanish alphabet has extra letters?

The Spanish alphabet currently has 27 letters, but at one point it had 30 letters. Three extra letters of the alphabet have been crossed in the list above out since they are no longer a part of the "official" Spanish alphabet.

The Royal Spanish Academy decides on any official changes to the Spanish language, such as adding new words and changing grammar rules. They removed the letter RR back in 1803, and the letters CH and LL were removed in 2010. The academy removed them to simplify the Spanish alphabet, since these letters are just combinations of existing letters of the alphabet.

The remaining, unique letter of the Spanish alphabet is Ñ, but there is speculation that one day it will be officially removed like the others.

All of these special letters have not changed in their pronunciation. Therefore, many teachers still find it useful to teach the 30 letter-alphabet.
