Introductory Spanish
(5th & 6th Grade Spanish)The Introductory Spanish courses are designed to introduce rudimentary Spanish pronunciation, vocabulary terms, and grammar skills. This course also eases the transition into high school level Spanish courses. By the end of 5th grade, students should be approaching level “Novice Low,” able to compose many short phrases and simple sentences. By the end of 6th grade, students should be at "Novice Low" and approaching level “Novice Mid,” composing many simple sentences.
In Unit 1, students will focus on foundational vocabulary acquisition. By the end of the year, they will have learned over 200 words in Spanish. They learn the days of the week, weather, introductions, numbers 0-100, months, time and date, articles, colors, shapes, animals, school subjects, and school objects. Students will also construct simple, formulaic sentences in Spanish.
In Unit 2, students will learn subject pronouns, formal vs informal expressions, people terms, infinitive verbs, expressing likes and dislikes, clothing, accessories, three regular verb patterns, beverages, meals, fruits, vegetables, and house terms.
In Unit 3, students will learn family terms, possessive adjectives, numbers over 100, how to express family relationships, emotions, and locations. They will learn many more regular verbs and high frequency irregular verbs.
In Unit 4, advanced students will learn various irregular verbs, how to use secondary verbs, sports, parts of the body, jobs, verbs commonly used at school, school locations, and some compound verb structures.
Spanish 1
(High School & 7th Grade Spanish)The Spanish I course is designed to give students a solid foundation in the Spanish language and qualify them for a Spanish I high school credit. By the end of Spanish I, students should be at level “Novice Mid” and approaching “Novice High,” composing short paragraphs with many simple sentences and a few complex sentences.
Vocabulary topics include weather, seasons, conversations, likes and dislikes, numbers 0-100, adjectives, articles, telling time, classroom objects, feelings, locations, interrogatives, meals, beverages, restaurant terms, locations, family, comparisons, clothes, colors, restaurant terms, transportation, and numbers up to one million.
Grammar topics include three regular verb patterns, seven irregular verbs, and three stem-changing verb patterns. Students will also cover other grammar topics such as prepositions, adjectives, and adverbs.
Cultural topics are optional and will vary. If time allows, students also learn relevant cultural tidbits that crossover with the content covered in class such as food in other countries.
All four language skills are covered--reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Spanish 2
(High School & 8th Grade Spanish)The Spanish II course is designed to continue a student's foundation in the Spanish language and qualify them for a Spanish II high school credit. By the end of Spanish II, students should be at level “Novice High” and approaching “Intermediate Low,” composing paragraphs with simple sentences and more complex sentences.
Vocabulary topics include ordinal numbers, party terms, housekeeping, holidays, sports, equipment, parts of the body, health terms, outdoor activities, technology, internet lingo, daily routines, vacation terms, bargaining, and handicrafts.
Grammar topics include direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns, new irregular verbs, compound verb forms, reflexive verbs, affirmative and negative expressions, imperative tú commands, the present progressive tense, and the past preterite tense.
Cultural topics are optional and will vary. If time allows, students also learn relevant cultural tidbits that crossover with the content covered in class such as food in other countries.
All four language skills are covered--reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
